It has been beyond a pleasure to work with Scotty (Scrit Scrat, Scrittles, Slap Shot, Scott) Zwang for the past 3 years. Scotty transformed Sonic Spank into a band, brought our songs to life and blew our minds with his wealth of pop music knowledge. And jeez, he destroyed the drum kit every show.

Scotty has decided to leave the band and peruse other musical opportunities and he will be greatly missed. Sonic Spank will still continue to overload your senses as a quartet with new drummer, Jeremy Worthington formerly of Bodega. This kid brings an entirely different tidal wave of energy to Spank. See for yourself and listen to our recent show at The Church in Boston. It’s only Jeremy’s second show with us…

The management team for Sonic Spank is proud to announce the band’s new member, bass player Dave Palan. Dave has spent years on the Philly scene as a sought-after live and session bassist, playing with an array of musicians including Fathead, Alo Brasil & Blivit and the band is excited to be adding his talents and experience into the mix. After taking Dave on the road for a solid month of touring west to Chicago and as far south as Miami it was clear that Dave was the right choice.

Now as a four-piece band Sonic Spank is ready to return home to Philly on December 1st at Underground Arts, 1200 Callowhill Street with a fresh sound featuring new music from their recent album DRAMA.

DRAMA is a departure from dominant trends in electronic dance music and features some of the strongest, most accessible songwriting Sonic Spank has produced yet. The album features a host of guest bassists from such heavy-hitting jam-electronic acts as Brothers Past, The Disco Biscuits and Lotus to name just a few.

After 3 years of evolution, Sonic Spank has tapped into something entirely different with DRAMA. Laptop and vocoder effects have been abandoned for live bass guitar, human voice and more personal songwriting. Drama’s songs are rooted in the real-life struggles of passionate relationships. With songs drawn from band members’ break ups, changing relationships, confusions between love and lust and even emotional breakdowns, Sonic Spank is exploring new territory with a completely new sound and direction. Yes, audiences will still rock out at shows, but Drama offers anthems that take the Spank live experience to a whole new level as the band’s first true concept album.

Singles “Quality Time” and “Maybe This Is What I Need”, now available or free online, have racked up major listens since its release. DRAMA was mixed by PJ Geissinger (a.k.a Starkey)

Please visit http://sonicspank.bandcamp.com/ to hear DRAMA, the new album from Sonic Spank. If you need more information about the band, additional promo material or to set up an interview, please contact:

While Philadelphia’s Sonic Spank has only been around since 2009, the band has gone through major changes musically. At first Spank was a dynamic duo featuring Benjamin Karp and Ian McGuire combining synthesizers, guitar, laptop samples and extremely dirty song subjects (“Crygasm”, “Lick It From Behind”, “Bukaki-Maki”). As drummer Scotty Zwang and vocoder lyrics were later added, the overall sound became more complex, yet still sounding very produced and robotic. After 3 years of change, the latest evolution of Sonic Spank has tapped into something entirely different. Computers and vocoder have been abandoned for live bass guitar, human voice and more personal songwriting. Spank’s latest album titled DRAMA (mixed by PJ Geissinger aka ) showcases these elements along with the band’s first attempt at not just a full length album, but more importantly a concept album. After spending so much time focusing on stirring the sexual energy in the audience, Sonic Spank has attempted to concentrate on connecting with deeper emotions that pretty much anyone can relate to…the struggle of passionate relationships. Through composing an album based off of band member’s personal situations involving break ups, relationship status changes, confusion of love/lust and emotional break downs, Sonic Spank has explored new territory with a completely new sound. Yes, audiences will still rock out at shows, but now the band offers anthems that will take their live experience to an entirely bigger level. Enjoy the ride.
